A great alternative to electric units, gas hot water services are commonly installed all around the Brisbane area. If you have access to piped gas or bottled LPG, this is a good option to consider.
The advantages of gas hot water systems:
The running cost of hot water is lower.
They have lower greenhouse gas emissions.
They are more energy efficient, especially the new 4-star and 5-star rated models.
Gas costs the same all day and does not have the time-of-day cost factor that electric heaters have.
Most models have both natural gas and LPG versions.
Same day installation is available in most cases.
Gas heaters come in two different varieties:
Storage Hot Water
This is a storage tank that heats water with a gas source. Water is preheated and maintained at a designated temperature in the tank, so it is ready when needed.
As the name suggests, water is preheated and stored in an insulated tank, ready for use when needed. The amount of water stored depends on the capacity of the storage tank (heater).
The advantage of this system is that you have piping hot water whenever you need and it is delivered at a constant pressure, so even if a few different hot water taps are running in the house, the pressure and temperature is not affected.
The disadvantage is that once the storage unit runs out of water, it takes some time to heat more water. That means the water could turn cold if you are the last one in a large family to head for the shower. However, this is unlikely to happen often if you install a storage unit of the right capacity for your needs. Storage units are typically recommended when there are more than 3 users.
Storage units have been quite popular for residential and commercial use for many years now. While brands have different warranties, most offer 5 to 10 years. They come in stainless steel or vitreous enamel-lined mild steel. Some stainless steel units do not have an LPG model. Instantaneous Hot Water (Continuous Flow)
With Instantaneous Hot Water Units there is no storage unit, so water is not preheated. These units are also known as continuous flow or tankless hot water units. When you turn on the hot water tap, cold water enters the heating unit and triggers the gas burner which heats the water before delivering it. That means hot water never runs out, but it does have a high demand for gas while heating.
This system has some real advantages:
You can never really run out of hot water.
Different water temperatures based on use (shower, dishwasher etc.) can be set at the heating unit so it does not need to be modulated at the point of use. That means water never overheats, saving energy.
A lot of energy is needed to keep hot water at a constant temperature (as in storage units). Since these units don’t store water, they have lower a running cost.
Since they don’t store water, there are no problems like bacteria and mould that storage heaters could have if the water temperature is not high enough.
The disadvantage is that when active, instantaneous units have a high demand for gas and this restricts the locations where they can be installed.
