Christmas Labrador - Seasons Greetings from Salmon Plumbing

Salmon Plumbing’s Top 5 Tips for a Hassle-Free Christmas!

If you’d rather not invite one of our plumbers over to your place for Christmas (no offence taken), we’ve put together a few handy tips so you can minimise your chance of having front-row seats to a ‘Plumbing Nightmare Before Christmas!’

1. Turn Off Your Water Supply When Going Away

It’s a good idea to turn your water supply off if you are going to be away for an extended period over Christmas or the New Year. This ensures that in the unlikely event of a water emergency when you are gone, you won’t return to a home ravaged by water damage!

2. Stop Food Leftovers Going Down the Drain

Don’t wait to see what Santa brings you this Christmas, give yourself the gift of unclogged drains by purchasing an inexpensive sink strainer This can stop bits of food debris clogging up your pipes and could save you the headache of dealing with a bigger plumbing problem later. Put food leftovers in the bin or compost – not the sink!

3. Never Pour Oil or Grease Down the Sink

Hot fat and oil quickly solidify when they cool and can cause major issues in your plumbing including blocked pipes and clogged sewer lines leading to overflow in your home and a wider environmental impact. Instead, make it a habit year-round to wipe cooled oil or grease from pots and pans with a paper towel and then dispose of it in the bin. HANDY HINT: After you have finished the Christmas wash-up, take the time to pour a jug of boiling water down the sink – it can do wonders to keep the drain clear and odour-free.

4. Place Bins Next To Toilets Throughout Your Home

If you don’t want guests to put an unexpected drain on your finances this festive season, place a bin next to all the toilets in your home. This will encourage visitors not to flush unwanted items which can cause problems in your system such as flushable wipes, feminine hygiene products, cleansing wipes, cotton balls and buds, etc.

5. Leave 15 Minutes Between Showers

Having guests in your home can put more pressure on your hot water system and your drainage. Encourage visitors to allow around 15 minutes between showers. This will give your hot water system time to reheat the water and allow excess soap and hair to drain away which could otherwise build up and block your drains.

BONUS TIP

If you have been experiencing slow drains or dripping taps this year, RIGHT NOW is a good time to give us a call and take care of any potential drain blockages or faulty tapware so you can avoid an emergency call out on Christmas Day.

Having said all that, rest assured that should you find yourself in need of a plumbing expert at any time, Salmon Plumbing will be open for business as usual – 24/7, 365 days a year!

Wishing you a Christmas overflowing with laughter and love, and a New Year flushed with success!
