As Spring eases us into the Australian heat, now’s probably the time to start prepping your property’s plumbing system for the summer.

The hotter months can wreak havoc on plumbing systems and lead to damage without the proper preparation.

Lucky for you, we’ve put together 4 tasks you can add to your Sunday to-do list so that you don’t have to stare down an expensive plumbing bill around Christmas time.

  1. Get those gutters de-cluttered!

A build-up of leaves, sticks and other debris in your gutters can be a bit of an eye-sore when you invite family and friends round for the all-too-popular Aussie summer barbecue.

Not only that though, all that junk can also clog your gutters – which can limit the precious amount of water you’re able to catch during the drier months.

Water catchment is important in the summertime, not just for individual homeowners, but also the wider community.

Plus, any kind of overflow that can occur from clogged gutters could also lead to unexpected damage to your home and emergency repairs – an unwelcome hit to the bank balance!

So, make sure to get up there (safely!) and clean your gutters out as soon as you can.

  1. Schedule a plumber for a pipe inspection.

The jump in the amount of baths and showers people have during the summer to keep cool means you need to make sure ahead of time that your plumbing system can handle it.

Inviting a plumber in for an inspection is a great way to identify any possible issues with your plumbing, like a cracked pipe or blocked drain, BEFORE it ends up causing irreparable damage to your property.

Scheduling a professional is easy and takes no more than five minutes over the phone. That’s nothing compared to the time and money you could save by identifying a problem early.

  1. Consider dialing down your hot water heating

No one is looking for that sudden searing heat of a hot shower in the middle of summer

In fact most people in your home will likely start bathing a lot more in an effort to try to cool down before bed or after some time out in the sun (thanks to that brilliant Aussie heat!)

So, why not take advantage of the fact that less people in your home are likely to want hot water?

Try turning down the hot water temperature on your hot water system. This can save you a significant amount when it comes to bills and, if it isn’t working, you can always turn it back up.

It’s important to note that whilst you can turn your hot water system down, you should not lower the temperature below 60degrees celcius, as this can cause major health issues.

If you’re unsure how to do this, or feel even the slightest bit doubtful of your ability to do it, you can always call a local plumber for some advice.

In situations like these, they may not even need to attend and could just advise you over the phone what you need to do.
