Flexible hose assembly under bathroom sink

What is a flexible hose assembly and what does it do?

Flexible hose assemblies are rubber or PEX pipes covered with stainless steel braiding. They are used to attach domestic plumbing fixtures to the main water and require a flexible arrangement due to space, movement, or aesthetics.

Any toilet, shower, sink, washing machine, refrigerator, dishwasher, or hot water service system that attaches to the water supply will have a flexible hose assembly. As they are usually positioned between the main water supply and before on/off taps, when they fail, the fallout can be catastrophic. In fact, when a hose bursts, the flooding damage can quickly rack up tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

Why are flexible hose assemblies under the spotlight?

The sale of non-compliant flexible hose assemblies has raised concerns in Australia.

Flexible hose assemblies must meet Australian standards as stated in AS3718:2021 and AS3499:2022. Any hoses that do not meet these strict Australian standards are not legally allowed to be sold or installed in Queensland under the Plumbing and Drainage Act and Non-Conforming Building Products Legislation.

Five to ten years is the general life span for compliant hoses. Checking these regularly should be part of your home maintenance routine.

How do I know if my installed flexible hose assemblies are compliant?

To determine whether a flexible hose assembly is compliant, you can search by brand make and model on the Watermark Product Database. If the hose is not listed, this indicates the product does not meet Australian standards. Alternatively, the hose may have been compliant when installed but no longer meets today’s higher standards.
