Living in subtropical Brisbane means enjoying between 280 – 300 days of sunshine a year, which locals know is as blissful as it sounds. But the trade-off for this idyllic weather is our infamous storm season. From November to April each year, Brisbane experiences hot, humid weather and thunderstorms. This can bring lightning, heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and – during extreme storm events – flash flooding.
Preparing your Brisbane home for storm season is clearly important, but every year we get callouts to repair storm damage that could have been prevented. All too often, homeowners are unaware of how minor plumbing issues can expose their property to major vulnerabilities during heavy rain. Yes, we know not everybody finds plumbing systems as fascinating as we do, but discovering it’s not up to scratch AFTER a storm can really ruin your day. So is your home ready for the wild weather ahead?

How Plumbing Protects Your Home During a Storm
Nothing tests the plumbing and drainage infrastructure of a property more than torrential rain. Two key components – roofwater management and stormwater management – are responsible for protecting your home when the heavens open.
The Roof Water Drainage System: collects rain that falls on the roof and diverts it away from the home and into a stormwater drain.
The Stormwater Drainage System: collects water that falls on land (your yard) and channels overland flow away from the foundation of your home and into the nearest stormwater drain.
From there, stormwater must be directed to a legal point of discharge. Depending on your property, stormwater may:
Connect to the council stormwater network.
Run to the kerb/street.
Discharge at ground level.
Run into an in-ground absorption pit.
Think of these systems as your home’s best defence against the damage caused by flooding and moisture ingress via the roof. Even a minor problem within this complex system of gutters, pipes, pits and drains can prevent rainwater from travelling through the system as it should – and when a storm hits, things can go sideways very quickly.
And if it were up to us, we’d choose lower-cost preventative plumbing jobs that help our customers avoid disaster over exxy emergency repairs every time.
1. Check Your Roof Gutters and Downpipes
It’s not uncommon for your home’s roofwater drainage system to go right over your head – pardon the pun. But this humble plumbing infrastructure is what stands between heavy rain and the inside of your home. So if you prefer the rain to stay outdoors, it pays to look up.
Signs Your Roof Drainage System Isn’t Storm-ready
Roof Leaks
Roof leaks are a very unwelcome sign that water is finding its way inside your house. You don’t need a plumber to tell you it’s not supposed to do that. Left unchecked, roof leaks can lead to mould, internal water damage, increased pest activity, and most seriously, structural damage.
Common Causes of Roof Leaks
Deteriorated and damaged roof materials. E.g. cracked or missing roof tiles, loose metal sheets.
Damaged, lifted or rusty flashing and cracked sealant around roof penetrations. E.g. Whirly birds, skylights, aerials, etc.
Damaged ridge capping caused by rain and high winds.
Signs To Look For
Water dripping from the ceiling.
Stains on the ceiling or walls.
Peeling or bubbling paint or wallpaper.
Sagging or bulging in the ceiling.
Visible mould or a damp smell.
How We Can Help
A roof that leaks is a roof that’s not waterproof. Please don’t ignore it!
Our skilled plumbing team can locate the source of the roof leak and provide comprehensive repair solutions.
Roof guttering works by safely and efficiently directing rainwater into downpipes and away from your home. If this water can’t flow freely, it can pool in gutters and back up in downpipes until it eventually spills over the edge. Ignoring this problem can have serious consequences. In particular, if water overflows into the eaves, it can cause internal damage to the roof cavity, walls, ceilings, and foundations.
One thing to note: a well-designed and functioning guttering system can still overflow during extremely heavy rain, typically when a large volume of rain falls in a short period of time and overwhelms the system. However, in most of the cases we see, the overflow is preventable.
Common Causes of Overflowing Gutters
Problems with the Gutters:
They’re blocked with leaf litter and other debris.
They’re too small for the size of the roof.
They’ve been improperly installed. e.g. inadequate pitch.
They’re damaged, sagging, or detached.
Problems with the Downpipes:
They’re clogged with leaves, twigs, dirt, sediment or moss.
They’re undersized, improperly spaced, or there aren’t enough of them.
They’re connected to an undersized or blocked in-ground stormwater drain.
Signs To Look For
Gutters that overflow even during light rain.
Visible debris or plants growing in the gutters.
Sagging or rusty gutters.
Downpipes with cracks or surface rust.
Rotting soffits and fascia.
Water stains or mildew on exterior walls.
Puddles of water near the foundations.
How We Can Help
Giving your gutters and downpipes a thorough clear out can make a huge difference to their functionality during storm season. However, if regular gutter maintenance doesn’t solve the problem, it’s time to call in your friendly plumber – that’s us!
Our team will inspect your roofwater drainage system and recommend suitable repair, replacement and prevention solutions. These may include:
Gutter guard installation to reduce leaf litter accumulation.
Design and installation of an upgraded roofwater drainage system calculated on the surface area of your roof, and the capacity needed for peak weather conditions.
Installation of additional downpipes and downpipe extensions.
Adjusting the guttering slope to ensure proper drainage.
Clearing stubborn downpipe blockages.

2. Check Your Backyard Drainage System
The way surface water flows across your property and drains away is an important factor in protecting your home from serious damage. So if Brisbane storms have a habit of turning your backyard into a temporary paddle pool, your outdoor drainage system needs attention. And it’s not just puddles you need to worry about. Poor backyard drainage attracts termites, cockroaches and rodents, can cause long-term damage to the foundations of your home, and can increase the risk of flooding.
Signs Your Backyard Drainage Isn’t Storm-ready
We know that life is busy, and it’s easy to put off dealing with issues that might seem minor. So your landscaping looks a bit dodgy – it’s not your main priority. But we’ve seen far too many homeowners left with seriously expensive water damage that could have easily been prevented if they’d made some small upgrades to their backyard drainage system. So our advice is to take a wander through your yard to check for possible drainage issues – and then deal with them ASAP.
Common Causes of a Slow-Draining Backyard
Undersized stormwater pipes.
Inground drains that are undersized, poorly designed or positioned, or insufficient in number.
Drain grates that are damaged, covered or blocked by silt and garden debris.
Incorrect garden slope that directs surface water towards the house foundations instead of away.
Stormwater drains that are damaged or blocked by soil, debris or tree root intrusion.
Hardscaping that impedes the flow of surface water. E.g. patios, tiled paths, driveways.
Signs To Look For
Standing Water: Puddles that hang around for hours or days after a rain event. Never ignore pools of water close to your home’s foundations – moisture can seep into concrete slabs, leading to costly structural damage.
Soggy Lawn: The yard is frequently muddy, or grass is squishy underfoot. Mosquitoes will love it, which is another excellent reason to investigate the cause ASAP.
Soil Erosion: Concentrated areas of displaced soil caused by surface run-off. Even worse is the erosion you can’t see when the soil underneath the footings of your home shifts, leading to foundation instability, uneven settling, and structural damage.
Unpleasant Smells: Funky odours emanating from the stormwater pit can indicate a broken or blocked drain pipe.
A Note About Stormwater and Sewer Drainage
Stormwater and sewer systems have separate drainage networks, and it’s illegal to connect the two. A serious non-compliance issue we see is downpipes that empty into a sewer drain. During a storm, large volumes of rainwater pouring into the sewer drain can quickly overwhelm the system, causing sewage to back up and spill into your home via the toilet and floor drains. Additional pressure can also lead to burst pipes. Yes, it’s as gross as it sounds.
If you suspect your downpipes are incorrectly connected to the sewer system, give us a call.
How We Can Help
Simple improvements to your backyard drainage can save you the heartache and expense of preventable storm damage.
Our backyard drainage services include:
Maintenance, repair and installation of all stormwater plumbing infrastructure.
Audit of existing stormwater drainage to identify current issues, highlight potential future problems and recommend long-term repair and preventative solutions.
Identification of non-compliant drainage installations (e.g. illegal discharge points) and recommendations for resolving these issues.
CCTV drain inspections and advanced pipe location to accurately diagnose damaged or blocked drains, pinpoint the location of the damage and/or obstruction, and provide an appropriate repair solution.
3. Other Considerations for Improved Flood Resilience
Flood Risk: Check the Brisbane Flood Map to determine the risk to your property and plan accordingly.
Internal Floor Drains: Professional inspection can confirm that floor drains in the bathroom, laundry, etc., are functional and free-flowing.
Backflow Prevention: If your Brisbane property has a swimming pool, rainwater tank or a bidet toilet, you may be required to have a backflow prevention device installed. Check with your local council for the most accurate advice.
Overhanging Tree Branches: If your home is surrounded by trees that drop leaf litter and twigs on your roof, regularly trimming branches back can assist with keeping gutters and downpipes clear. Consult an arborist to safely perform this work.
