In a world where we are constantly bombarded by advertising messages, finding the right plumber can feel like a gamble.
After all, how do you tell which companies have stood the test of time and which popped up last week? Which have the skills, experience and integrity to do a good job and which are fuelled by fake reviews?
Choosing the right plumber can save you endless headaches and thousands of dollars.
Here’s what to look out for.
How to choose the best plumber in Brisbane
To find the right plumber, start by becoming an internet sleuth. Investigate the companies you have to choose from, keeping track of what you find on a spreadsheet.
Check the reviews
The most common way of assessing the quality of a tradie is to check the reviews on Google and their social media accounts. This is a good place to start, but keep in mind that the internet is full of shonky reviews.
Check the review dates and note any patterns. Does a plumber in business for only two years with over 20,000 five-star reviews seem legitimate?
Look into the business
Check that the business is registered and has an active ABN that matches the name using ABN Lookup. Also check how long the business has been operational and whether it has gone through multiple name changes (not a good sign).
Ensure you are using a licensed plumber. Using an unlicensed plumber leaves you uninsured for the plumbing work performed. A quick check of the QBCC site will tell you whether your plumber is licensed and what type of work they are licensed to perform.
Service guarantees
What sort of service guarantee do they offer? Consider whether this gives you enough time to discover a problem and have it remedied. Are there any customer reviews that mention the business doesn’t honour service guarantees?
Reputable products
Plumbers often have a selection of brands they recommend and choose for jobs. This is beneficial because it means they’re very familiar with how the product works and can easily repair it or replace parts when needed.
However, it is important that the plumber chooses the best product for your job, not the one that provides the best kickback to the business! Are the products they offer of good quality? Do they suit your job? Do they offer all the features you need?
Type of operation
This is known as the peace-of-mind factor. Is the business a franchise, a man with a van, a corporation, or a reputable mid-size business?
Each has its pros and cons.
For example, franchises offer consistency around pricing but are also required to adhere to a fixed range of products, meaning that choosing the right product for your job is more difficult. This may result in a sub-optimal option being used, with expensive repairs down the track.
A man with a van has more flexibility when it comes to product choice and pricing but may not have the full range of tools for all jobs, meaning you’re paying for inefficiency.
Large corporate companies have massive overheads that are reflected in their pricing. They may also be less inclined to come out for small jobs, so achieving consistency can be difficult.
Mid-sized plumbing companies have lower overheads but usually have all the tools for the job. They can choose from a wide range of products, but their work is only as good as their skills and reputation.
Expertise and experience
Find out how long the plumbers have been operating and the type of work they’ve done. This really matters!
Remember to apply this not only to the company overall but also to the technicians who will be coming out to do the work. Just because the boss knows the job top to bottom, doesn’t mean all his staff do.
Are they using the right gear?
While it shouldn’t fall to you to understand the inner workings of your plumbing and the full range of plumbing tools, it helps to have a basic understanding of what they’ll be doing.
Check that your plumbers have everything needed on hand before the job starts. This will save time and money wasted running back to the hardware store.
Pricing structure
How much have they quoted for the job? Is this in line with the other quotes you’ve received? If significantly higher or lower, find out why.
While a low quote can seem like the obvious choice, there is often something being left out that may be important.
Be on the lookout for ‘Bait and Switch’ pricing, where a company offers a very low quote and then smacks you with pricy extras you just can’t do without.
Find out their payment terms.
Emergency service
If your pipes all burst and the flooding’s the worst, who you gonna call?
Not your plumber, if they don’t have an after-hours emergency number!
Even something as minor as forgetting to turn an isolation tap under the house back on can turn into a weekend without water if no one is prepared to come out.
