No, it’s not a title we made up to make ourselves feel special! And not just anyone can call themselves a Master Plumber. In fact, it’s an excellent way for the general public to choose a reputable tradesperson to handle their plumbing work.
Read on to learn about what makes a plumber a Master Plumber and why Salmon Plumbing are so proud to be part of the Master Plumbers Association of Queensland.
What is a Master Plumber?
To become a Master Plumber in Queensland, a plumber or plumbing business must be a registered member of the Master Plumbers Association of Queensland (MPAQ). This membership is granted to fully qualified and licensed plumbers who meet the highest trade and business standards. Master plumbers are also bound by MPAQ’s code of ethics.
When you choose a master plumber in Brisbane, you can be confident they:
Are fully licensed, qualified and extensively trained
Strictly adhere to best trade and business practices at all times
Provide the highest level of workmanship, professionalism and integrity
Are up-to-date and trained in the latest plumbing advancements, including technical skills and knowledge, and any changes to Qld plumbing regulations and legislation.
MPAQ is the peak industry body representing plumbing contractors throughout Queensland.
MPAQ understands the key role that the plumbing industry plays in the health and safety of our community, as well as the environment. They take this responsibility very seriously and are committed to maintaining a safe, professional and successful plumbing industry.
Members are provided with expert advice, business support, specialist training, and more to ensure that master plumbers in Brisbane are at the peak of the industry.

Committed to the industry we love
John Salmon has been in the plumbing trade for 40 years – and he’s even more passionate about the industry than when he first began.
Through Salmon Plumbing, he’s been providing top-quality plumbing services to residents and businesses in Brisbane since 1991. With his wealth of knowledge and experience, he has built a reputation for delivering exceptional workmanship and customer service.
John utilises his extensive experience and expertise to support and strengthen the plumbing industry. In this leadership role, he has been involved in advocating for improving industry training and standards, mentoring young plumbers, and working collaboratively on key industry developments and apprentice training initiatives.
MPAQ Board Member
Salmon Plumbing is a proud member of MPAQ, and John has served on the board since 2010. He is currently a councillor.
PVC Pipe Recycling Scheme
John envisions a future where sustainable initiatives can significantly reduce the environmental impact of the plumbing industry – and the work must start now.
He was instrumental in the inception and implementation of the Construction Plastics Recycling Scheme. The voluntary program sought to divert PVC off-cuts from landfill by providing recycling drop-off points for the construction industry across South East Queensland. The immediate success of the program saw seven drop-off points quickly double. With the assistance of a Queensland Government grant, expansion plans will soon bring this number to 40 drop-off locations.
2023 MPAQ President’s Award
In 2023, John was awarded the prestigious MPAQ President’s Award. The award recognises someone who has made significant contributions to the plumbing and gas industry through their leadership, training, mentoring, or development, as well as their contributions to the Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland.
Winning this award is a major achievement for John and a reflection of his tireless work in service of the Queensland plumbing industry. He has set a high bar for other plumbers to follow with his award-winning plumbing services and leadership skills.
The Salmon Plumbing team are rightfully proud of this well-deserved recognition and inspired by the difference one person’s hard work can make. However, they know that John would rather be out there doing the work than onstage receiving awards!
A bright future for an evolving industry
Master plumbers will continue to play a vital role in our communities, and John is determined to ensure the industry delivers this important service to the highest of standards. This means continuing to innovate and evolve in a rapidly changing world driven by technology.
John recognises the important role that master plumbers play in actively passing on their wisdom to ensure the future looks bright for apprentice plumbers. Of course, being a great plumber does not automatically make someone a great teacher. To address this, John has been advocating to government and other industry groups to develop training that enables master plumbers to be effective teachers. In this way, all experienced plumbers would have access to the necessary resources and skills to teach today’s apprentices how to be tomorrow’s masters.
