Undertaking a Rheem water heater cost evaluation will help you manage your budget, too. So read on for everything you need to know about upgrading your Brisbane home to Rheem hot water.

The Cost Of Rheem Hot Water Systems

Rheem hot water system prices vary depending on which type, model and size you choose to install. The system you ultimately choose should be the one that best caters to the hot water needs of your household – now and in the future. In addition, installing a Rheem energy-efficient hot water system can reduce your water heating energy consumption by up to 70%. This adds up to significant savings on your energy bills.

It’s also worth weighing up the initial cost to install a new Rheem hot water system as compared with the cost to run it in the long term. For example, a $2,000 electric system may be perfectly adequate for a single person but installing that same system in a large family household could cost many thousands of dollars extra in unnecessary running costs over the lifetime of the system.

Many Brisbane homeowners choose Rheem hot water systems because of their reputation for the highest quality products and excellent customer service. Anyone who has been caught without hot water knows that life comes to a grinding halt when the pipes run cold! When you install a Rheem hot water system, you’ll have peace of mind that Rheem certified plumbers (that’s us!) are committed to getting your Rheem hot water system back online within 24 hours.

Rheem Heat Pumps

Rheem hot water system - heat pump hot water units

Heat pumps are a smart, energy-efficient and cost-effective approach to water heating. They use the heat in the surrounding atmosphere, acting like a reverse cycle air conditioner ensuring homes have a steady supply of hot water. They use less energy than traditional electric water heaters and are eligible for federal and state government rebates and incentives. Hot water heat pumps work all year round, day or night, in sunshine or rain and even on cooler days, as there is heat in the atmosphere that can be used.

As a guide, a Rheem heat pump hot water unit usually costs between $3,200 and $4,900 to supply and install.

Rheem Solar Hot Water

Rheem hot water system - solar hot water units

Rheem hot water systems make it easy to reduce your environmental impact. Solar systems can currently save up to 1.0 to 2.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per annum. Installing clean, renewable solar hot water is one of the simplest ways to dramatically cut your carbon emissions and contribute to a sustainable future.

Solar water heaters work by absorbing energy from the sun’s rays on the roof-mounted solar collectors and transferring it to heat the water stored in the tank. By using the natural power of the sun, a solar hot water system can benefit homes and businesses with energy savings for years after installation.

The Rheem solar range includes both split, ground-mounted and complete roof-mounted models in a variety of capacities from 180 – 410 litres. Rheem solar systems are available with electric or gas boosting, providing hot water during cloudy or rainy weather.

Choosing the Right Rheem Hot Water System for Your Home

The Rheem hot water system you choose will depend on where you live in Brisbane, which way your roof faces, and even the pitch of your roof. If you’re unsure, chat with your local Rheem plumber about which hot water system is ideal for you.

Many households change over time, so it’s important to choose the right capacity to meet your needs both now and as your family grows. Factors to consider in determining your hot water requirements include:

  • Number of bathrooms or people using hot water at the same time.
  • Adults and children in the home (teenagers will use more hot water than young children).
  • Dishwashers or washing machines connected to hot water outlets which may use hot water at the same time.
  • Whether a large bathtub or spa bath will be used regularly.
  • Space available to install a water heater.
  • Available energy supplies – gas or electricity.

Choosing the right hot water system can also be influenced by:

  • The water conditions, climate and water pressure in your region
  • Where you live in Brisbane
  • Which way your roof faces, and even the pitch of your roof

Woman shivering under a cold shower - needs an expert in hot water repairs

Hot water system acting up? It’s a very cold wake-up call when reliable hot water suddenly lets us down! Without it, everyday routines are all but impossible – so the quicker you can get hot water repairs sorted, the sooner you can get the family routine back on track.

Here’s what you need to know about getting your hot water system up and running again ASAP!

Common Signs Your Hot Water System Needs Attention

Your hot water system is a mechanical device, and therefore, susceptible to having things go wrong occasionally, particularly if it hasn’t had regular servicing. Some common issues Plumbers in Brisbane see include:

  • No hot water
  • Water temperature is too hot or not hot enough
  • Leaky tank
  • Low pressure when running the hot water
  • Water has an unusual smell and/or colour
  • System is noisy

These are just a few signs that your hot water system needs attention. However, properly diagnosing the issue depends on a range of factors.

What Causes Problems With Hot Water Systems?

Hot water systems are complex and problems are not always straightforward to diagnose – particularly because not all systems operate using the same technology.

There are four kinds of hot water systems:

Hot water repairs can be required for relatively simple things like a tripped circuit breaker or a malfunctioning thermostat. More major problems include a broken heating element, or water or gas leaks. In addition to the hot water unit itself, each system has pipes and other fittings and the problem could be with any of these elements. In some cases, problems arise due to sediment clogging the pipes in your home.

So who do you call to assess and repair your hot water system?

Who Handles Hot Water Repairs?

If your hot water system is not working as expected, calling a plumber with expertise in hot water systems is crucial. By acting quickly to address the issue, you may even prevent further damage to your system.

Hiring the local odd-jobs guy to handle hot water repairs might seem like a smart way to save money but buyer beware. Not only are there regulations around who can undertake certain plumbing and electrical work, using an unlicensed person to repair your hot water system can have expensive consequences. From voiding your warranty to being liable for uninsured work, or even requiring a full hot water system replacement due to incorrect or poorly completed repairs, the risks are just too high.

Installing a New Hot Water System

Over time, a household’s hot water needs can change. If your old system is no longer providing enough hot water or you’re looking for a more energy-efficient option, Salmon Plumbing can advise you on the best hot water solutions for your needs. We’ll install your new replacement system quickly and dispose of the old system for your convenience.

Not to mention our warranty assurance. We don’t just install systems; we guarantee their performance. Our meticulous installation practices ensure your manufacturer’s warranty remains valid, providing you with peace of mind.

$3700 Homeowner Rebate: What’s the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme?

Australian government small scale energy scheme STC rebates for green home initiatives

Get ready to save on energy! As the cost-of-living crisis puts pressure on Aussie homeowners, the government is offering a new incentive – the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme – to help you cut costs and make the transition to renewable energy.

What does this really mean? It means that you can take advantage of limited-time savings to install environmentally friendly features in your home. This will help you protect the planet while also boosting your property value and ultimately helping you secure a more cost-effective energy supply.

Wondering how the $3,700 homeowner rebate works and how you can secure funding? Keep reading to find out more!

What is the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme?

The Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme is a Federal Government incentive program designed to help everyday Aussies go green. The program is set up to support Australian homeowners with environmentally conscious installations and renovations.

If you’re eligible for the rebate, you can use the cash in a way that works for you. The scheme can help you fund the installation of solar panels or a new eco-friendly heat pump hot water system. This rebate is for all things renewable – even when replacing existing solar and heat pump systems!

By choosing to install eco technologies at the right time, you can enjoy better savings offers and make the switch to greener energy systems early in the transition. This will set you up to save money later on and start reaping the rewards sooner.

What You Can Expect to Save

While the new incentive program is known as the $3,700 homeowner rebate, that’s not always exactly what it provides. Rather, eligible homeowners can secure a maximum of $3,700 in funding towards eco home improvements. It all depends on your specific needs and eligibility.

Under this program, the amount of money you get back is calculated based on what you’re purchasing and how much impact your plan will have towards Australia’s renewable energy transition objectives.

The amount you save will vary based on the credits you qualify for and the professionals you’ll work with to install technologies, not to mention priority standards based on the area you live in.

How to Calculate Your Rebate

Before you start booking home improvements, it’s important that you understand just how much rebate you can expect to obtain. This is where the rebate STC calculator comes in.

The rebate works using small-scale technology certificates – or STCs. Each STC credit is valued between $0 and $40. Hot water systems, for instance, are generally worth between 15 and 30 STCs. Currently, STCs are hitting an average of about $37 per credit.

To find out what you can access, all you need to do is use the calculator to input your system’s brand, model, and expected installation date, as well as your postcode. This will help the system produce an accurate estimate of your funding eligibility, allowing you to plan your project.

Australian Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme Solar water heater STC calculator including a Rheem 280 AmbiPower Heat Pump in Brisbane

For example, if you used the cash-back offer today to install a Rheem 280 Ambipower Heat Pump in Brisbane (a zone-3 postcode), your project could be eligible for 21 STCs. If each STC is worth around $35, you could secure up to $735 in funding.

Get Your Rebate NOW!

The good news is that you can access the small-scale renewable energy scheme rebates right now! But these offers won’t last forever. In fact, rebates such as these have been decreasing in value by approximately 10% every year.

If you want to improve your property and adopt renewable energy technologies, there’s never been a better time to get started. Your best option is to book in NOW while the credit prices are hot.

Call Salmon Plumbing, your North Brisbane plumbers, and we will help you secure your rebate.

Even More Savings Available

Some other great ways to save on plumbings costs include:

  • Make the most of your call out fee and have your friendly Brisbane plumbers take care of other “small” plumbing maintenance jobs at the same time as they install your new hot water system. Don’t underestimate what a leaking tap cost in the long term on your water bill – and power bill if it is the hot water tap.

We know replacing a hot water system can be a large and unexpected household expense. Find out about the finance options availble. Talk to Salmon Plumbing, the interest free plumber Brisbane residents can rely on in a hot water emergency.

Modern under-sink boiling water dispensers can add, rather than detract, from the aesthetic of your office kitchen, and can deliver not just instant boiling water, but also chilled or sparkling water at the touch of a button!

6 Reasons Why You Need an Instant Boiling and Chilled Water Tap in Your Workplace

1. Workplace Health (and Happiness)

A healthy workforce is a productive and happy workforce! Keep your staff hydrated throughout the workday by providing easy access to better-tasting water that has been filtered to remove sediment, chemicals, parasitic cysts, and lead. Under-counter water dispensers deliver instantaneous boiling, chilled and sparkling water for ultimate office catering convenience.

2. Environmentally Friendly Water Supply

If the strategic use of energy and the reduction of waste output is important to your business, switching to an instant boiling water tap that also delivers filtered chilled water is the logical solution. Not only do they negate the need for plastic water bottles which is good news for the planet, they are also designed to reduce energy consumption through innovative heat exchange technology. Another important factor to consider is that instant boiling and chilled water taps also reduce water wastage, allowing employees to only pour the exact amount that they need.

3. Economical

In an environment where demand is high, a sustained supply of boiling water is far more economical than running an old hot water boiler or repeatedly boiling a kettle. During periods of inactivity, instant boiling water units are designed to go into standby mode, maintaining a steady but lower water temperature that can quickly be increased when needed.

4. Safety

Instant boiling water taps come with built-in safety features to protect your staff. They also cater to employees with mobility issues as they don’t require them to pick anything up to pour.

5. Time-Saving

It’s not surprising that chilled and boiling water taps have become so popular in the corporate world. From a business efficiency point of view, it makes sense to alleviate the time employees wait around to make a drink. Without the need to queue up or wait for the water to boil, staff can enjoy their coffee or lunch break in its entirety, allowing them to return to their role feeling more rested and productive.

6. Aesthetics

Under-counter instant boiling and chilled water taps come in a range of modern styles that can give your office kitchen a sleek, minimalist appearance They also ensure fewer spills, less mess, and minimal steam.

I Live in Brisbane – How Can It Be This Cold? And What NOT To Do About it!

A cold snap has hit Brisbane! On this side of the country, we never seem to ease into each season, it’s always just so sudden. So now we’re scrambling to get the warm bedding and clothes out of storage, set up the heater and prep for the cold.

Woman shivering from the cold in her Brisbane apartment

When we get chilly weather, we still need to be conscious of saving energy and costs. So here are some friendly reminders of Dos and Don’ts for your hot water and solar energy systems.

COLD WEATHER DON’TS

DON’T set your hot water thermostat too high

It can be tempting to crank your hot water thermostat super high. But heating up to these hot temperatures will cost you a lot of money. There is also the added risk of being burnt. We know you want to warm up in a steam-filled bathroom, but if you’re coming out of the shower with red skin, it’s not a good thing!

So, what temperature should the thermostat be set at? 65°C is the best temperature for your hot water storage to prevent bacterial growth. However, this can still scald you when it comes out of your taps and showers. Installing a tempering valve will ensure a safer temperature. These are the temperature settings we recommend:

Taps and Showers: 50°C (or 45°C for households with young children or elderly people)

Laundry and Kitchen: 60°C

DON’T mess around with your solar tariff

You might notice a drop in solar energy production. Don’t mistake this for a problem with your solar system and start messing with your tariff set-up. Remember, solar relies on the sun, not heat.

It is natural for there to be less energy because of shorter winter days, not the cold. Even though it doesn’t feel like it, on a clear day, the sun still shines on your panels. They will happily do their job!

COLD WEATHER DOS

DO clean your solar panels

Regularly cleaning your solar panels is important for your solar system efficiency. Dirty solar panels can lead to a 5% – 35% power loss.

It is recommended to clean your panels and free them of dust and debris every 6 to 12 months. Just make sure you go about it safely!

DO turn off power hungry appliances

Be conscious of what appliances are plugged in and consuming energy. Make a habit of turning everything off before you leave for work and before you go to bed.

If you have solar power, make the most of the energy by setting the washing machine and dishwasher to run during the day. If you are planning to cook some hearty winter meals, try to put the slow roast in the oven when the sun is still up.

Power Bill Hikes Again! Here’s Five Easy Hacks to Slash Your Water Heating Bills TODAY

As electricity prices continue to rise, finding ways to cut down on household expenses becomes increasingly essential. For Brisbane residents, a significant portion of energy consumption often comes from water heating contributing to hefty utility bills each month. However, with a few easy adjustments you can take control of your water heating costs and reduce your environmental impact. Let’s explore five easy ideas you can implement today to lower your power bill.

Soaring electricity prices - combat rising prices by reducing hot water heating costs

1. Optimal Temperature Settings

Did you know that lowering your hot water temperature, even by a degree or two, can lead to significant energy savings? Hot water units are designed to operate at an optimal setting, for comfort, safety, and energy efficiency, around 65°C. Whilst it’s essential to consider individual preferences and household needs, it’s worth checking your unit’s setting, drop it if you can and the savings will add up.

2. Harness Solar Power

If you are in the market for a new hot water unit, it might be the right time to consider a solar-powered one. Brisbane’s abundant sunshine presents a golden opportunity to harness solar energy for water heating. Don’t jump into it though. It is important that the unit’s size is suitable for your needs and placement is key so make sure it is properly installed and maintained.

Investing in a solar water heater can significantly reduce your reliance on traditional energy sources, translating into long-term savings on your electricity bills. Remember if solar energy just isn’t your thing, installing a heat pump provides an excellent return on investment – and your savings will only increase as power prices go up in the years to come. Talk to your local Brisbane hot water specialist about which hot water system represents best running cost efficiencies for you.

3. Maintenance and Inspections

If your current hot water unit isn’t yet ready for an upgrade, seriously consider scheduling regular maintenance. A service will give your hot water system a thorough once over, ensuring all components are functioning correctly, any potential leaks or faulty valves are addressed, and any necessary adjustments are made.

When you have a leak, you’re not only wasting water, you’re wasting power on heating water – these added costs can sneak up and surprise you on your next utility bill. Additionally, when left unkept, these units can and have been known to cause significant water damage if they spring a leak! Don’t risk it.

4. Reduce Water Waste

We always hear about how much water Australians waste. ‘Don’t be a wally with water’ was certainly one of those slogans that has resonated with many of us. Cutting down on water-related waste is not only environmentally friendly but also economical, and very easily done! Limit your hot shower to five minutes or less and swap to a water-efficient showerhead. It will save you in water usage and water heating costs. Who’d have thought?

Take a tour of your home – inside and out – and inspect your taps for leaks. Take a look at your toilet bowl, can you seen a water ‘run’ at the back of the bowl? Don’t forget your laundry taps and showerheads. You would be shocked at how quickly a leaking hot tap can add to your water AND energy bill and the potential for property damage. Your local Brisbane plumber can easily help you fix any leaking taps.

5. Ask Yourself “When is Off Peak Electricity?” for a Lower Power Bill

One of the best-kept secrets going around that you absolutely MUST learn about is Brisbane’s off-peak electricity period. Yes! Electricity is cheaper at different times of the day.

Off-peak electricity refers to periods during which electricity demand is typically lower, leading to reduced rates. Designed to incentivise energy usage during off-peak hours and therefore helping to ease the strain on the electricity grid, energy providers offer a range of tariff plans that are well worth looking into. For example, tariff 31 operates between 10 pm and 6 am whilst tariff 33 operates 18 hours a day at Energex’s discretion. If you can switch to a more suitable tariff, this could be your opportunity to use a timer device to schedule your washing machine or to have your hot water unit run.

Tapping into off-peak electricity and implementing a range of very simple yet effective strategies can help to significantly reduce your electricity bills. Why not give them a go? You’ve got nothing to lose and an opportunity to enjoy a lower power bill next quarter.

What Are Tempering Valves and Do You Need One?

Hot water from tap - tempering valves mitigate scalding events

Tempering valves play a vital role in maintaining safe and comfortable water temperatures while also being energy efficient and doing their part in water conservation. Think of a tempering valve as a mixing valve. Essentially it is designed to regulate water temperature.

Do you need one? The short answer is yes! Some believe that it depends on various factors including the type of hot water system you have, the depth of your safety concerns, and how strict you are with compliance. However, here’s an in-depth look at tempering valves and the benefits they offer homeowners.

Safety and Preventing Scalding Accidents

One of the key reasons for ensuring your hot water unit has a tempering valve is safety, especially in households with children or the elderly. Designed to blend hot water from the unit with cold water to deliver a controlled temperature, it works to reduce the risk of scalding accidents which can occur when water temperatures exceed safe levels. Temperature regulation is something we take for granted but never really consider what drives this balance.

Convenience and Efficiency

Aside from key safety considerations, a tempering valve provides consistent water temperatures throughout the home especially where you’ve got multiple taps in use and you expect a steady flow of warm water without sudden temperature fluctuations. By optimising the flow of water, you’re also benefiting from energy efficiency because the tempering valve prevents excessive heating of water and ensures that hot water is used efficiently.

Compliance with Regulations

If you are building or renovating, or simply looking to purchase a new hot water system, make sure you enquire about specific building codes and regulations concerning the installation of tempering valves. To meet compliance, they may likely be mandated to ensure that your plumbing system meets safety standards and reduces liability risks.

From a manufacturer’s perspective, a tempering valve contributes to the longevity of a system and helps reduce the frequency of repairs. Some insurance companies may require the installation of tempering valves as a condition of coverage. For peace of mind, it’s worth doing your research and asking questions.

Where Are Tempering Valves Installed?

Tempering valves are mandatory on hot water units in Queensland, limiting the temperature of the water leaving the tap to a maximum of 50 degrees Celsius to reduce the risk of scalds. Other places where tempering valves can be fitted in your home include:

  • to a zone of concern (like the bathroom); and
  • to individual fixtures.

When aged or faulty hot water units are replaced, it is sometimes necessary to identify, remove, replace or alter existing tempering valves that have been installed at points other than the hot water unit. If they have been installed in areas that are not readily accessible, it can add significantly to the cost of the replacement of your hot water system. Always talk to your plumber about appropriate places to install tempering valves.

Most modern continuous flow gas hot water systems do not require a tempering valve as the water temperature is set electronically and delivered at 50 degrees Celsius.

Aged care, childcare and some other commercial settings (e.g. hairdressers) are subject to different standards and must use thermostatic mixing valves which do a similar job to tempering valves but are a testable device.

Standard Tempering Valves v High Performance Tempering Valves

High performance tempering valves are more sensitive to temperature variances than standard tempering valves.

Hot water storage units must keep water at a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius or above to limit the growth of dangerous bacteria in the water. Installing a tempering valve on a hot water unit ensures the water leaves the tap at 50 degrees Celsius or less.

Most hot water units will keep water at 65 – 70 degrees, however, a heat pump hot water system will only heat the water to 60 degrees. For this reason, it is especially important that heat pump hot water systems are installed with high performance tempering valves as they deal with smaller temperature variances between the temperature of the hot water in the unit and the temperature of the water leaving the unit.

Salmon Plumbing only uses high performance tempering valves on all their hot water systems and this is already factored into their pricing for the installation of the new hot water unit.

Protect Yourself With Tempering Valve Installation

The multifaceted benefits of installing a tempering valve in your hot water system make it a worthwhile investment for homeowners – and may be required to comply with local building codes and regulations. So if your system doesn’t have a tempering valve, arrange installation ASAP – not only will you be safeguarding against scalding accidents but the savings on your hot water bill will be a much-needed bonus.

How to Reduce Water Heating Costs in Brisbane

Running the water to heat the shower. Low Flow shower heads can help reduce water heating costs

With soaring temperatures and frequent use of hot water systems, you might find yourself facing hefty energy bills. Fortunately, it’s not difficult to reduce water heating costs in Brisbane.

Implementing simple strategies can significantly reduce water heating expenses without compromising comfort or convenience. By making small adjustments like installing high-efficiency water heaters and using low-flow fixtures, households can enjoy significant savings without much effort. It’s a practical approach in today’s cost-conscious environment where everyone is seeking ways to cut expenses.

Setting the ideal hot water system temperature to reduce heating costs

One of the most effective ways to save on water heating costs in Brisbane is by adjusting your hot water system settings. This includes adjusting the thermostat to what is considered to be the optimal temperature; typically around 60-70 degrees Celsius. This temperature can prevent bacterial growth in the water while also minimising the risk of scalding injuries.

It is always essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your specific hot water system to ensure key performance and safety. However, a factory setting is often greater than what it should be so take the time to seek the advice of a professional installer and if there is an opportunity to lower the temperature to what is considered an ideal range, do it. It can instantly help prevent excessive heating and reduce costs.

Regular hot water system maintenance

Regular maintenance of your hot water system is another essential aspect of cost-saving measures. Brisbane’s hot and humid climate can accelerate wear and tear on water heating systems, leading to decreased efficiency and increased energy consumption over time. A simple service callout, scheduled regularly, will help ensure your warranty is maintained. In addition, regular servicing allows your plumber to identify and repair leaks, corrosion and other issues before they become costly problems. Keeping up to date with maintenance is also an easy way to prolong the lifespan of your hot water system.

Water saving solutions in your own home

Another practical tip for reducing water heating costs is to make rather minor changes within your home. By adopting water-saving habits like turning off dripping taps, fixing leaks, and even installing low-flow showerheads, you can significantly lower your water bill. A leaking hot water tap will cost you big time – in water usage and extra water heating costs. Depending on the hot water system you own, some even offer you the option of installing a timer or scheduling hot water usage during off-peak hours to take advantage of lower electricity tariffs.

Upgrade to an energy-efficient hot water system

If you are in the market for a new hot water system, take the time to investigate the range of energy-efficient models on offer. Better still, chat with the team at Salmon Plumbing for expert advice on the best unit for your home. Everyone’s water usage and requirements differ so it’s important to choose the system that fits your household needs.

Modern water heaters come with a range of features – everything from improved insulation to smart controls that allow for better temperature regulation. Whilst the initial outlay may hurt the hip pocket, factor in the long-term savings. It’s a worthwhile investment, especially in Brisbane’s climate. And don’t forget to enquire about any available rebates, incentives, or energy-saving programs offered by the government or your local utility providers. You might find an offer that will accelerate your return on investment.
