When your hot water system was first installed, your plumber will have left you with a system manual, a warranty, and a recommendation to arrange routine hot water servicing which includes replacing the tempering valves every five years.

But if that was a while ago, your memories are probably a little hazy – so if you haven’t been thinking about your hot water valves since then, we don’t blame you! It seems like such a small thing – what difference could it really make?

Water being released from hot water tank as part of servicing and replacement of hot water tank valves

In fact, replacing the valves can keep your hot water unit working at its peak efficiency and can extend the life of your tank. One small replacement can mean big savings in water, energy and money!

The importance of hot water tank valves

While the valve is a relatively straightforward mechanism, the overall role it plays in your hot water system is extremely important. These valves are all about water pressure and water temperature and are pivotal to ensuring the longevity of your hot water tank by releasing pressure on the system.

How hot water tank valves work

Your hot water tank has an inner tank and an outer casing (for safety, insulation and the protection of the inner tank). The inner tank of the hot water unit expands and contracts a little with every heating cycle. As your water heats up, it puts pressure on the tank and the tank expands. Instead of continuing to let the pressure build and have your tank eventually burst, the valve relieves a little of the pressure by releasing a small amount of hot water into the overflow. This means more cold water is released into the unit to keep it regulated at the right temperature.

What happens as hot water tank valves age?

As valves on your hot water tank age, the temperature variations at which they work become less precise. The temperature variations increase over time as the valve wears and the system begins to work less efficiently. Not only does this lead to increased water and energy usage, it also places additional strain on the structure of the hot water tank.

The hot water tank valves only carry a 12-month warranty, so a five-year replacement as part of your hot water servicing is a must. Remember the older the valves get, the closer they are to failing, so replacing them will avoid emergencies.
